Opossums are nocturnal animals most known for their ability to play dead. But did you know that they can't choose when to act this way? Their stiff state is an involuntary reaction triggered by the stress that arises when they face danger. To top off their morbid performance, opossums secret a stinky odor from a special gland, too. Predators like bobcats can't see through this act and most often decide to find dinner elsewhere. Let's make it clear that opossums aren't all stink and death: They can hang by their tail, are nearly immune to rabies and most snake venom, and are masters at eradicating Lyme Disease by eating the ticks that carry it.
